Item Description

A hard to find Garnet specimen from the Pine Creek Mine in Inyo Co., California, better known for its Laumontite specimens. This small cabinet sized specimen hosts many orange-brown colored dodecahedral crystals of Grossular measuring up to 6 mm sitting on matrix, associated with white Feldspar (presumably Albite) along with Fluorite, Scheelite and Clinochlore ("Chlorite"). The Garnets seems to have a bit of etching in spots, not damage, but if you look closely you can see that some of the exterior layers of some crystals have been partially dissolved away, and a few of the Garnets are actually HOLLOW inside! The Scheelite is easy to spot under UV light, as it glows a pretty blue color, but it's hard to notice in indoor lighting. We've only seen a handful of these Garnets over the years, so if you collect worldwide Garnets or minerals of California, don't miss out on this elusive specimen from this former large underground and open pit W-Mo-Cu-Au-Ag-Bi mine. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
