Item Description
A hard to find specimen of Grossular Garnet from the Pitts-Tenney Quarry in Minot, Maine featuring a 3.1 cm, sharp, well-formed, very lustrous, pastel orange-brown colored dodecahedral crystal on matrix. This locality is not a pegmatite like many in Maine, but rather a metamorphic deposit with calcium-bearing silicates. The Grossular crystals from this quarry are well-known, but seldom seen in today's market, and certainly some of the most recognizable examples from any locality in Maine. Please note that this crystal is undamaged on the front/display side, but it is contacted on the back, so it's not 100% complete. It's still very showy, and in my experience, it's rare to have a single isolated crystal free-standing on matrix like this from the Pitts-Tenney Quarry. From the collection of Gerry Morvell, with a dealer label stating it was originally part of the collection of Al Sebela.
