Item Description
Garnet gems are found in virtually every color of the rainbow. Grossular is one of the more diverse species of Garnet as far as color is concerned, as it's found in red, orange, yellow and green gems. This stone is from the famous Jeffrey Mine in Quebec, where some of the finest examples of the Grossular have ever been found. They have a distinct orange color (sometimes called "Cinnamon Garnet"), and they are often referred to as Hessonite, a name given to the red and orange Grossulars around the world. This "emerald" cut gem has a classic peach-orange hue with VS clarity. The fact that the stone is over 4 carats is a big deal, not only for the locality, but Garnet in general, as most Garnet species are not seen in the 4-5 carat range in terms of faceted gems. This locality is completely closed down, and will never produced these amazing stones again, and if you collect Garnets, or if you're a specimen collector, and you'd like a good sized cut gem to match for a "rough and cut" set, don't miss out on this one. A wonderful collector quality stone for any fan of Garnets or these distinctive gems from Jeffrey. This stone is from the estate of former Phoenix area dealer Marvin Rockey. Rockey's Gems was a significant business in the early days of Arizona lapidary material, and he was a prominent dealer and buyer in the Arizona area of local lapidary and carving material from throughout the state, along with material from Mexican localities. This stone was kept back from the retail stock for its quality and beauty, in a tray of special gems, and was found in his estate (sold to us only recently). Today, these are not only rarely seen but of a highly desirable old quality, and sought after by collectors and gem / jewelry enthusiasts alike.
