Item Description

A very good quality matrix display specimen of the lesser-seen Grossular Garnets from the Coyote Front Range in California. This three-dimensional small cabinet sized specimen host a few highly lustrous, very sharp, well-formed, rich reddish-brown colored dodecahedral crystals (with slight trapezohedral modifications) measuring up to 2.3 cm on matrix. A few of the front faces of the Garnets are in good condition, but the sides and back of the piece is incomplete, where it was removed from the pocket wall. The amazingly high luster combined with the gorgeous color of the Grossular crystals makes this a fine quality specimen of these uncommon Garnets from near Bishop. This is certainly one of the better pieces I've had to offer from the locale, with LARGE sized crystals to boot! The labels accompanying the piece state that the light green colored associated mineral on the piece is Epidote, but I'm not 100% convinced, and I think it's possibly Diopside. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
