Item Description

A large dodecahedral crystal group of Grossular Garnet, only labeled as coming from Chihuahua, Mexico. The piece is comprised of the main crystal, with a few smaller, secondary dodecahedrons flaring off the sides. All of the faces are rather sharp, smooth and lustrous. The piece is in good shape all around, but it's not complete on the bottom, where it apparently was contacted after it grew against either another Garnet crystal or the pocket wall. One of the corners on top of the crystal is also contacted, but you almost never see crystals of Garnet over 2 inches in diameter from anywhere, so crystal of this size and quality is a big deal. The color is best described as a soft "sandy" hue, and it almost has a slightly sparky sand-like reflective quality just below the surface of the crystal faces when the piece is rotated in the light. A worthwhile Garnet crystal for any fan of worldwide Garnets or minerals of Mexico. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
