Grossular Garnet

Item Description

These distinctive and classic Garnet crystals started coming decades ago, and were originally labeled as coming from "Lake Jaco", but this was a misleading designation. Truth be told, there actually are no Garnets found at Lake Jaco, but it was the closest landmark to use for labels within the Sierra de Cruces area. This toenail sized piece features a sharp, well-formed dodecahedral crystal of Grossular measuring 8 mm, perfectly centered on the underlying matrix. A second smaller Grossular can be seen on the side of the piece for a nice touch. The color is a pleasing pink hue, which is rarely seen in any Grossulars outside of these pieces. A good quality specimen of this old classic material from the late 1970s.
From the collection of John Whatley, a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). John had many interests and hobbies, and favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals. He was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads and he co-authored the book, An Overview of Georgia Projectile Points and Select Cutting Tools. He was a member of the Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama Archaeology Societies and he also enjoyed volunteering in the Archaeology Department at SRS.
