Grossular (classic material)

There are countless localities for Garnet around the world, but when you have a piece like this, it holds a certain significance, as it's from the TYPE LOCALITY for Grossular, which dates back to the early 1800s. According to mindat.org, the species get its name, "for the color of gooseberries (Ribes grossularium) as the original specimens were this color". This piece features an excellent, sharp, well-formed, olive-green colored trapezohedral crystal with dodecahedral modifications, measuring 1.3 cm, perfectly centered atop the underlying matrix. No damage and very attractive. If you collect minerals from the type locality, or you're a fan of worldwide Garnets, this is a great piece to add to your collection. From the collection of Richard ("Rich") A. Kosnar, the well-known mineral collector and dealer from Colorado (1946-2007) and the namesake for the rare zirconium phosphate species, Kosnarite. Rich loved classic minerals from Europe / Russia, and actually named his company Mineral Classics for this reason.
