Item Description
Grossular is one of those Garnet species that is found in a wide range of colors, from rich reds and oranges to golden/yellow examples along with beautiful green crystals. The famed pieces from the Thetford Mines have the distinction of carrying a bit of chromium in their chemistry, and this powerful chromophore creates some of the most intense green colors seen in any Garnet species. This attractive specimen is loaded with hundreds of small (1-2 mm), sparkling crystals of "Chrome Grossular" showing textbook little dodecahedral faces, which are associated with small "sprays" comprising acicular crystals of straw colored Diopside on matrix. The Grossulars look beautiful up close, and we've provided some macro photos to show their quality. It's amazing to think that such little crystals can pack so much color, and they just draw the eye immediately. These pieces are seldom seen on the market now from this now-closed locality, and specimens of this size with such a rich amount of fine quality, intensely colored crystals is certainly desirable. A wonderful display piece of these alluring and beautiful Garnets.
