Item Description

The Lime Crest Quarry in Northern New Jersey dates back to the late 1800s and is well-known for its various marble minerals, including Spinel, Chondrodite/Norbergite and Phlogopite, but this piece features rarely seen crystals of bright silvery metallic Graphite in Calcite matrix. The Graphite crystals measure up to 7 mm and have a wonderful reflective luster with good hexagonal tabular form. These are notably rare on the market, especially in good sized specimens, so if you collect East Coast US minerals, specimens from New Jersey, or you just like interesting / oddball locality specimens, don't miss out.
From the collection of John Whatley, a well-known Georgia collector (1939-2022). John had many interests and hobbies, and favorite hobby was collecting rocks and minerals. He was a member of the Augusta and Aiken, SC Gem and Mineral Society. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads and he co-authored the book, An Overview of Georgia Projectile Points and Select Cutting Tools. He was a member of the Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama Archaeology Societies and he also enjoyed volunteering in the Archaeology Department at SRS.
