Item Description

For what it is, this is a huge, spectacular and very rare nearly solid nodule of lustrous, metallic, platy graphite with a greasy feel from a mining district opened in the 1760s, One end has a bit of quartz and the bottom has a bit of matrix. This impressive piece of elemental carbon was found in an unknown road cut. Not necessarily a pretty specimen to look at, but this truly an exceptional and large specimen of native carbon from this locale. Most such specimens are micros! Probably an older material and comes from a museum collection by exchange (no label, sorry). Value to the locality or native elements collector???
