Item Description

The Camp Bird Mine is one of the most famous localities in Colorado, and an especially iconic mine in the San Jaun Mountains. This major Gold producer operated for nearly a century (Gold was first discovered there by Thomas Walsh in 1896), but actual specimens of Gold are quite rare to find. This piece comes with a Camp Bird label and to me, looks like it must have come from an older part of the mine. The ore itself is unusual looking, featuring small bright metallic Gold "dust" in Quartz and sulfide matrix. A few small unidentified green patches can be seen on the pieces as well (possibly Clinochlore, or something not reported from the mine, e.g., Malachite). If you collect Colorado Gold specimens or simply interesting pieces from the Camp Bird, don't miss out on this one.
