Item Description
A really interesting and unusual specimen of Goethite labeled only as coming from the town of Mountain View, Missouri. It's hard to say if the piece was found on the surface, just lying around, or if it was collected from an actual mine or a surface digging. Regardless, this is the only specimen we've ever seen from Howell County. The piece has wonderful a globular or mammillary appearance, with a gentle golden-rusty hue on the surface and a dark brown-black color underneath. Very little damage and it's actually quite showy for what it is. An oddball locality piece, certainly a candidate to add to a collection of spherical minerals, or simply unusual specimens from lesser-known localities.
From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974.
