Item Description

Lepidocrocite or goethite specimens are VERY RARE from the ancient iron mines of the Rodheim-Bieber area. Lepidocrocite is a dimorph of geothite (same composition, but different crystal form). This is a dramatic and RARE combination with quartz. A fantastic 4.2 cm radiating spray of lustrous gray to brown blades, to 2.5 cm, some with striking gemmy golden tips is aesthetically set in the sculptural banded to crystallized quartz matrix. The stepped-growth quartz crystals at the top are a fine and rare bonus. MINDAT lists quartz for the locale, but there are no photographic examples. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 4932 and acquired from Al McGuinness in the mid-1960s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). Very rare, outstanding undoubtedly old-time combination material from this locale valued at $500.
