Item Description

Here we have a seldom-seen specimen from the Norfolk Southern Railroad Bellevue Yard near the town of Groton featuring an intergrown group of cubic Pyrite crystals which have been pseudomorphed by Goethite. The label accompanying the piece states that Limonite is replacing Pyrite, but the listing on mindat.org states that only Goethite is reported from this locality. Pyrite is not a species that is well-represented from Ohio, and these pieces are certainly distinctive, especially for a Midwest locale. You almost never see these on the market, so if you collect pseudomorphs, be sure to grab this one now, as we don't know when or if we'll have another to offer soon. From the collection of Dr. Barratt Phillips Collection.
