Item Description
Goethites after Pyrite from Prince of Wales Island are as attractive as any pseudomorphed Pyrites that I have seen, maybe even more so. But they are rarely seen! This is a remote, hard-to-access locality from which the Epidotes were famously found and helicoptered out. I cannot recall seeing a piece like this, of size and quality - they must have been uncommon at the time, and certainly are now. The crystal form after replacement remains razor-sharp, and the deep cinammon color has a distinct metallic sheen that raises the appearance to a whole new level. Much of the matrix is composed of intergrown, dark green Garnets, and there is associated Quartz and blades of highly-fluorescent Calcites. Possibly collected in the mid-to-late 70s by Doug Toland (main claimholder on the Epidote mine), this is a high quality small cabinet piece of unusual contrasts and with a great location. value d$750-950.
