Item Description

Gibbsite is an uncommon aluminum hydroxide species, which is rarely found in fine quality display specimens. Over the years, a few localities in China have produced some of the finest examples of the species, both in terms of color and formation. Keep in mind that Gibbsite is not often a terribly colorful species, but the Chinese specimens feature wonderful blue and green hues. This piece separates itself from the majority of other Chinese Gibbsites to come out of China due to the notably dramatic, semi-stalactitic form. The piece is dramatically three-dimensional, with superior aesthetics as you can see from the photos/video. It's loaded with attractive spherical aggregates measuring up to about 3 mm across, with a soft blue-green hue. The piece is in great shape overall, though one of the "limbs" is contacted on the upper portion, but nothing too terribly distracting from a display standpoint. Please note that the label accompanying the piece states it's from Baoshan in Yunnan but the photo online states it's from the Xianghualing Mine in Hunan, which is actually the correct locality. Priced in our inventory at $1,800. From the collection of Vasco Trancoso, a medical doctor and prominent mineral collector from near Lisbon, Portugal (https://www.mindat.org/user-11954.html). He assembled his mineral collection over the course of 60 years, and built a fine worldwide display collection that we recently purchased. This piece is pictured on mindat.org at https://www.mindat.org/photo-270345.html.
