Item Description
RARE, gemmy, cornflower-blue sapphire from Mogok. Corundum crystals from here are typically rubies or pink sapphires. The crystal is partially doubly terminated. The very glassy, textbook hexagonal crystal has a contacted termination, with no damage and the inclusions add contrast and character. The lower termination is partially dinged. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 1066 and acquired from Sol Shale in the 1950s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record. Classic and RARE Mogok sapphire. Moderate red fluorescence. 54.21 carats mass.
