Item Description
A beautiful, gemmy and lustrous, bi-colored tourmaline from the famous Gillette Quarry. The lower half of the well-striated, flattened crystal is teal-blue, grading upward to a pretty, apple-green below the peach-colored, three-sided, pyramidal termination. Complete all-around and essentially pristine, with only very inconsequential side wear. This renowned pegmatite opened in 1896 for gem tourmaline, mineral specimens and commercial grade feldspar. It closed in 1914 and reopened very briefly in 1934 and from 1942-44. It has been closed since. Outstanding, classic material from the Schlichter Collection, probably dating to the prmary mining period. It glows when backlit. 7 grams. Fairly valued at $1250-1500.
