Item Description
A significant, VERY RARE fine aquamarine from the less well-known Esmeralda Mine, near the renowned Himalaya Mine. Mineral specimens of any variety are RARE from the mine. The textbook hexagonal crystal has fine light ice-blue color and is dramatically highlighted by the multiple terminations. The lustrous prism is gemmy to translucent with water-clear to frosted prism faces. Cavernous etching to the glassy terminations, the protruding quartz crystal section and schorl sections attached to the contacted back add even more character to this excellent rarity. Mining started in 1899 and apparently ceased around 1909. John Sinkankas and others explored the pegmatite between 1956 and the mid-1960s, when this fine piece was collected. See MINDAT: https://www.mindat.org/loc-91270.html and the 2002 Mineralogical Record issue, Vol. 33, No. 5 for more information on the mine. Ex Bill Larson San Diego County Pegmatite Collection and long on display at his Pala International shop in Fallbrook. A superb and rare aquamarine from the locale. These are simply not for sale at any price and we were fortunate to get this old collection of such treasures. When they are gone...they are gone~! It was valued at $2000. Mass is 210 grams.
