Gem crystals of Quartz on Hematite

Jinlong Hill is know for its interesting and compelling Hematite and Quartz combinations and different styles have come out over the years. The finely-bladed Hematites, here in what I can best describe as 'woven books', have good metallic luster and just a hint of iron oxide coloration that enhances the typical grey-black color. In most of these combinations, the Quartz crystals tend to be long and slender, but here they are more equant, with the largest being about 1.7 cm. Being gem-clear and having such a superb, glassy luster, they look like a crown of Herkimer Diamonds ringing the Hematite. On the reverse side, the Quartz crystals are more densely clustered, and remarkably just a few are missing - mostly from the left edge. On its own merits, this small-cabinet specimen has a nice, sparkling aesthetic, made even more so by the unusual habit of the Quartz (they look like Herkimer Diamonds!). From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl, a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces.
