Item Description
Garnierite is the generic name for a rare green nickel ore which has formed as a result of lateritic weathering of ultramafic rocks (serpentinite, dunite, peridotite) (MINDAT). It is the synonym of nepouite, pimelite and willemseite. This is probably nepouite. Medium green garnierite with a waxy luster covers both sides of the serpentine matrix. Slickensides are visible on both sides of the piece. New Caledonia is the Type Locality for garnierite (discovered in 1864). Rare, old-time material as is comes with an old, probably late 1800s-early 1900s French label. Ex Columbia University Collection.... and apparently it was X-rayed in 1944. Value??
