Item Description

PLEASE NOTE: This specimen was labeled as coming from the "Chungwon Mine, Chung Cheong Buk Do, South Korea", but I can't find an entry for this locality in any database where Garnet and Quartz are reported together, so we're simply leaving it as coming from the North Chungcheong Province (previously referred to on old labels as the Chung Cheong Buk Do. It should be noted that Buk Do translates from Korean to North Province in English). With that said, this is the ONLY specimen of Garnet that I can remember having to offer from anywhere in Korea. It looks like it's from a skarn deposit, if I had to guess. Multiple well-formed, rich orange-red colored trapezohedral crystals of what could be Almandine or Grossular measure up to 7 mm across, and are associated with prismatic, colorless Quartz crystals measuring up to 1.3 cm long, on minor matrix. One end of the piece features foliated metallic silvery-grey bladed of Hematite. A really cool locality specimen for any fan of worldwide Garnets. It's almost unheard of to find good crystallized Garnet specimens from anywhere in Korea, so don't miss out, as it's the only one we have to offer, and it's exactly the kind of esoteric specimen you'd expect to find in such a deep, comprehensive collection like Kurt's.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#6 K), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel. We at The Arkenstone have the privilege of offering the remainder of this great worldwide collection over the next two to three years through our various platforms.
