Item Description

Garnet specimens from ANY Greenland locale are super-rare! And this one dates from the late 1700s to early 1800s! This is an impressive mass of solid foliated garnet crystals. Color ranges from pinkish-red to a glorious, gemmy cherry-red. This piece dates (according to a label) to the collection of Sir Robert Ferguson (1769-1840). The old label is his. He was a member of Parliament and the landed nobility from Fife, Scotland (he had stopped collecting by 1810 AS A RESULT OF A DIVORCE SETTLEMENT INVOLVING LORD ELGIN OF THE MARBLES FAME! ). A real antique! From a major rarities collection. These look to be either spessartine or almandine garnet. A must for the species or localities collector.
