Item Description

Mineral specimens are VERY RARE from obscure Victor Mine pegmatite in the Rincon Mining District of San Diego County. The Victor Extension did recover some rare garnet on muscovite specimens, such as this showy and excellent small cabinet combination. Two Almandine-Spessartine Series garnets, to 1.1 cm, are aesthetically set on the contrasting sculptural pearlescent platy muscovite matrix. The lustrous, modfied dodecahedrons are partially translucent with reddish-orange areas on the reddish-brown crystals. Developed in the early 1900s, it was never a major producer, but some fine tourmalines and aquamarines were recovered. See the 2002 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 33, No. 5.
