It's not easy to find a Garnet gem that's over 5 carats from almost any world locality. Over the last 20+ years we've seen some impressive larger pieces of Garnet coming from East Africa. What's really impressive is that they are often clean and show great saturation of color. It's important to note that many of the Garnets from this area are difficult to identify as a single species, and often show a mixture of two or more species. This particular gem to the eye looks like it's either a Spessartine or a Rhodolite, but it's impossible to know without analysis. With that said, it's truly impressive for the simple fact that it weighs nearly 18 carats, and is virtually eye clean with a tremendously rich red color and a beautiful "Heart Brilliant" cut. It's important to note that the stone is very dark face up, and requires a good amount of lighting for the color to come through, but the intense red flashes inside are truly captivating.
