Item Description

An outstanding classic old-time large combination from the historic Tri-State District. Seven, pristine, sharp, modified galena cubes, to 4.7 cm, with moderate lustre are very aesthetically scattered on the sculptural upright piece. Some of the cube faces have faint golden iridescence, adding color and character. The classic chert matrix is blanketed with pastel-pink, saddle-shaped dolomite rhombs and richly peppered with contrasting sharp, splendent golden chalcopyrite sphenoids. Mining began in 1849 and the last mine closed in 1970. See the excellent Tri-State District article in the 2017 Mineralogical Record, Vol. 48, No. 2. Ex Bob Reynolds Collection, a well-known fossil and mineral expert and Curator of the San Bernardino County Museum. He passed away in 2020. The base and back have been sawed to enhance the super display quality of this exceptional large combination. Mass is 2358 grams or 5.2 pounds.
