Item Description

Gagarinite-(Y) (formerly Gagarinite) sodium calcium yttrium halide specimen, named after Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first human to travel into space. Mindat.org lists only NINE valid localities in the world where the species has been reported. This specimen is from the Katugin TaNb deposit in Russia, where Gagarinite-(Y) forms a result of the altered cryolite. This piece features large sections of brick-red Gagarinite-(Y) (the color is apparently due to micro Hematite inclusions) associated with tan crystalline Thomsenolite. It's almost impossible to find pieces this size on the market, and if you collect rarities, this is something you're not likely to see in this size or quality again anytime soon.
The piece comes with an old label from the Fersman Museum. Valued $900 for size, quality and great rarity.
