Peridot is the gem variety of Forsterite (Olivine), and one of the few traditional gem mineral that is really only found in one color. While there are variations in the hue, Peridot is typically always some shade of green. Most people don't realize that true gem quality peridot is actually fairly rare around the world, due to the fact that it is susceptible to weathering, as it forms deep in the mantle of the Earth, and is eventually transported to the surface. For many years, Pakistan has been a great source of gem quality, well-formed Peridot crystals, which are some of the best examples ever found. This is an attractive thumbnail featuring a well-formed, sharp, very gemmy, lime green color crystal of Peridot with no matrix. The termination is undamaged, but the base is contacted where it was separated from the pocket wall.
