Item Description
The Florissant Formation is a sedimentary geologic formation outcropping around Florissant, Teller County, Colorado. The formation is noted for the abundant and exceptionally preserved insect and plant fossils that are found in the mudstones and shales. Several books have been written about these fossils, and there are many resources online detailing the area and what has been found there. This piece is a wonderful example of said material featuring a beautifully well-preserved flying insect fossil (presumably some kind of Diptera) frozen into the mudstone matrix.
