Item Description

The Florissant Formation in central Colorado is a sedimentary geologic formation outcropping that is well-known for an abundance of exceptionally well-preserved insect and plant fossils that are found in the mudstones and shales. These are classics, known for many decades, and several books have been written about these fossils. Additionally there are many resources online detailing the area and what has been found there. This piece is a wonderful example of said material featuring a beautifully well-preserved flying insect fossil (presumably some kind of Diptera) frozen into the mudstone matrix. The insect fossil measures about 1.0 cm across.
