Item Description

The Florissant Formation in Colorado is a sedimentary geologic formation outcropping around Florissant in Teller County. This area is noted for the abundance of exceptionally well-preserved insect and plant fossils that are found in the mudstones and shales. Several books have been written about these fossils, and there are many resources online detailing the area and what has been found there. This piece is a wonderful example of said material featuring several beautifully well-preserved flying insect fossil (presumably some kind of Diptera) frozen into the mudstone matrix. The largest insect fossil measures about 1.0 cm across.
