Item Description

An impressive large cabinet sized display specimen from Clay Center featuring a full coverage of sharp, well-formed cubic crystals of Fluorite measuring up to 2.1 cm on edge, which have a rich golden-amber color internally when backlit, though they look more of a brown hue in reflected light, but the most interesting aspect is that the surface of the crystals has a beautiful light golden reflective iridescence, which is rarely seen in Fluorite from most world localities. The Auglaize Quarry might be better-known Ohio locale for iridescent Fluorite crystals, and in my experience, the Clay Center specimens are rarer with this particular feature. Overall the piece is in good shape, though there are a few broken Fluorites, so it's not completely undamaged. A handful of bladed pale blue-white crystals of Celestine can be seen in select spots for a nice touch. Certainly one of the largest examples of this specific material that we've had to offer, and keep in mind that most Fluorites from this quarry do not have iridescent faces, making this a bit more desirable from a rarity aspect. Originally in the collection of Paul Lazar.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 9.2.1 OH.8; 7059 George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
