Item Description

An alluring and beautiful Fluorite specimen from the Yaogangxian Mine, a mine that produces a variety of Fluorite specimens in a seemingly inexhaustible variety of colors. However, this robust grape-jelly purple color is literally one of the most famous and recognizable of all styles here, and this is an older piece (probably early 2000s). This piece consists of several, transparent, rich purple Fluorite cubes that display subtle zoning. The larger, more isolated crystal measures to 3.6 cm on its longest edge and the others are somewhat smaller and more tightly clustered. The large crystal is transparent, and more dramatic/detailed in person due to the visual result of all of the subtle, low-profile, cubic growth hillocks on the faces. A thin, 1 mm, dark purple rim is present all around the outer edges of the crystal, while the central portion is completely clear without zones. The other Fluorites are in a small cluster off to the right side and are from 1.1 to nearly 2 cm in size. What REALLY makes this piece is the drapery of contrasting calcite! All of the Fluorite crystals are embellished with starkly contrasting white Calcite consisting of 2 to 5 mm, platy crystals in tight groupings that selectively blanket portions of the Fluorite crystals for great aesthetics. There is some minor, silvery Muscovite admixed with some of the Calcite at the base of the piece. A well-composed and balanced specimen from this famous locality, a full miniature or smallish small cabinet in technical size, and just a sharp geometric piece. Better than most similar examples in this size and style, if you see it in person. Valued $4000-5000, and from the large and old Chinese minerals collection of Dr. Steve Smale.
