Item Description

Old-time, LARGE CABINET, fluorite plates from the famous mines of Weardale in this imposing size, quality and combination species are very uncommon and highly desirable, indeed! And it is in good shape, with almost no damage at all despite its size. Lustrous, translucent, pretty lavender, fluorite cubes to 2.0 cm are dramatically accented with a very well-placed scattering of large, lustrous, galena crystals to 6.0 cm. The plate of solid fluorite matrix, is further strikingly highlighted by preferential coatings and bandings of drusy quartz and sparkly sphalerite (which we had previously mislabelled as specular hematite but note here a correction thanks to collector Jesse Fisher). These unusual accents really add to the very distinctive character of this fine specimen. Expertly collected, this historic and important large old-timer is in super condition. Riveting purple fluorescence, as you would expect, is also diagnostic of Weardale despite the incorrect older label with it (and thanks again to Jesse Fisher and Joan Kureczka for confirming this fact in addition to that the look of the piece is Weardale, as we believed). An early acquisition of J. Cilen (# 1160), as we have offered specimens at auction numbered up to 17950 from his collection. Probably it is around a 100 years old or older, but no proof in label form. Fairly valued at $2100 for size, quality and combination. Comes with a custon-made lucite base as a free bonus. Specimen weight is 12.6 pounds or 5.7 kilos and the lucite base weight is 3.1 pounds or 1.4 kilos. Extra charge for shipping.
