Fluorite (richly colored)

A classic example of these well-known Fluorites from Southern Illinois. This area is no longer producing specimens, and they have been highly sought after by collectors in recent years. This piece is an attractive and worthwhile Fluorite specimen featuring a pair of predominant, gemmy, sharp, dark purple colored cubes of Fluorite measuring up to 2.8 cm, without matrix. The piece looks great when backlit, as the Fluorites are rather gemmy, and there is a bit of yellow Fluorite underneath (mistakenly identified as "Calcite" on the label). This material has largely disappeared from the market, and these pieces will go down as some of the most beloved Fluorites from any US locality. Good shape overall, with very little damage on the display side of the specimen. From the collection of Dick Hauck. Dick is an avid collector of minerals, books, and mining memorabilia, along with being an accomplished author in the mineral world. Arguably, his greatest claim to fame is being the co-founder of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Dick purchased the land on which the Sterling Hill Mine resides in 1988, and the museum has been running strong since.
