Item Description
Rich golden-amber, gemmy, lustrous, densely intergrown fluorite cubes, to 2.0 cm, with well-developed stepped-growth faces cover this RARE rich large plate from a limited 2008 find at this ancient limestone quarry. Fluorite from this find is unique, in that it fluoresces yellow (hydrocarbons?), rather than classic blue/purple commonly seen in most English fluorite specimens. Romans probably mined limestone at the Crich Quarry (MINDAT) and did mine lead in the ancient Derbyshire Orefield. Lead mining declined in the late 19th century, followed by fluorite mining. See the 1983 Mineralogical Record article in Vol. 14, No. 1. An impressive large fluorite plate from an uncommon locality with unique fluorescence. Valued at $750-1000.
