Item Description
This specimen is labeled as coming only from Ilmenau, but presumably it's from the Fluorite Mine in Gehren, as we've seen a few of those specimens over the years listed as coming from Ilmenau. This attractive full-sized cabinet specimen hosts a coverage of sharp, well-formed, translucent cubic crystals measuring up to 2.3 cm on edge with a soft silvery color on the outer edges, and a richer orange-peach color in the centers. When you flip the piece over, you'll see some slight cavities, which could possibly be "casts" after a preexisting mineral that was dissolved away. There are a few bruises, but the piece is truly the best specimen we've ever had to offer from Ilmenau, so it's certainly a desirable and attractive piece from this hard to find locality. Valued at $1,200-$1,500. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #0668CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
