The famous Elmwood Mine in Tennessee is famous for producing some of the most recognizable Fluorite specimens from any US locality. The classic purple cubes are a favorite among collectors, and it's easy to see why. This piece is not your typical Elmwood Fluorite, we typically see larger isolated cubes or groups of larger cubes on matrix, but this unique and hefty large cabinet display specimen features dozens of rather sharp, gemmy, purple cubic crystals of Fluorite measuring up to 6 mm on edge which are mostly scattered over a large mound of crystallized black Sphalerite sitting atop a layer of vitreous, cream colored Baryte matrix. A truly eye-catching and dramatic big specimen of this classic material from this prolific specimen-producing locale. I have seen thousands of specimens from this mine over the years, but I genuinely can't remember seeing on this specific paragenesis, with Fluorite ON Sphalerite ON Baryte. Sometimes you'll see the Baryte deposited on top of the Fluorite, but the Fluorite was clearly the last thing to form on this piece. If you collect Elmwood material, this is a must-have piece for its beautiful form and associations. Very minor damage can be seen, but it's more than forgivable for the overall quality and presentation on this piece. The specimen dates back to mining from the 1970s.
