Item Description

When it comes to minerals of Colorado, the various pegmatites in Park and Teller Counties have yielded some of the most recognizable specimens from any locality in the state. Amazonite is obviously the first thing that comes to mind, but this piece features what are arguably the two next best-known minerals from the area, Smoky Quartz and Fluorite. This is a fantastic, big showy display specimen of this famous material featuring a well-formed, gemmy/translucent, sharp, 4.0 cm crystal of pale silvery-blue colored Fluorite growing on the side of a very good-sized, dark, well-formed, Smoky Quartz crystal, with minor Albite and Microcline at the base. Please note that the Fluorite does a slight color change from a silvery-blue shade in sunlight to more of a silvery-purple color in warmer indoor lighting. It's quite difficult to find Fluorite ON Smoky Quartz like this in my experience from any locality in the Pikes Peak Batholith. . A fantastic, aesthetic specimen of this famous material. Please note that the piece has two repairs and one restoration according to the information on the underside of the specimen. The piece was mined by Joe Dorris in September of 2010. Valued $2,000 - $2,500.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 9.2.1 CO.16; 9309. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
