Item Description

Sharp, glassy, transparent, colorless fluorite octahedrons with satin lustre faces, to 1.3 cm (doubly terminated) are aesthetically scattered on the unusual etched galena matrix. Fluorite has long been considered a rare, but highly desirable accessory species from the historic mines at St. Andreasberg. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 7236 and acquired from Ron Bentley in March, 1974. Ron compared this with other Andreasberg fluorites and believed the piece is probably from the Catharina Neufang Mine. Specimens of ANY species are RARE from here. Kay assembled an important suite of classics and rarities from this famed district. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). See the Mineralogical Record St. Andreasberg Special Issue, May-June, 2017, Vol. 48, No. 3. The piece undoubtedly dates to the 1800s, as the last mine closed in 1910. The piece has been sawed to enhance the display quality. Excellent and RARE fluorite and galena from this famed locale.
