Fluorite (old classic material)

Item Description

A classic old-time specimen of beautiful golden Fluorite from the famous Hilton Mine in Cumbria, England. This locality dates back to the early 1800s, and was abandoned in 1963, so you know this piece is at least 60 years old, and likely well over 100 years old. Sharp, very well-formed, fine quality, gemmy, cubes of Fluorite measuring up to 1.0 cm on edge sit on matrix. As I rotate the piece, I can't find any serious damage, a few tiny nicks, and obviously the based is contacted where it was removed from the pocket wall. The piece displays well from several angles and really looks nice in all kinds of lighting, including halogen or sunlight. Classic material from this famous Fluorite specimen producer. From the worldwide mineral collection of Albert Lewis Kidwell (January 1, 1919 - August 16, 2008). Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974. The piece comes with a label from Rayner in London.
