Item Description

When it comes to Fluorite as a species, most people will tell you the most desirable color is a strong pink (rarely red) hue, but there only a few places in the world where this color of Fluorite is found. Most notably the finest pink / red Fluorites ever found are those from the Swiss and French Alps in Europe. In August 2019, there was a discovery of some of the most significant Fluorite specimens at the Huanggang Fe-Sn deposit, in Inner Mongolia, China. These specimens are genuinely some of the most important Fluorites found from any locality in China. It's important to remember the many tens if not hundreds of thousands of specimens of Fluorite that have been found in the last few decades, and these specimens from Huanggang certainly stand in the upper ranks. These specimens are certainly comparable to their Alpine counterparts, especially because they have the same habit and color, but in the case of the Chinese material, some of the crystals were incredibly GEMMY and actually facet-grade, so we had some stones cut from some of the broken crystals that we acquired in the various lots we purchased. This particular gem is a superb example of this material in terms of size, saturation of color and clarity. This stone has a glowing saturated rose pink color, it almost reminds me of the color seen in certain Rhodochrosite gems from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado. The cut is a "Square Emerald" or "Cut Corner Square Brilliant". The gem is nearly eye-clean, but please keep in mind that only the very tiniest of faceted gems of this pink Fluorite were actually 100% clean, because they all contains micro inclusions of a green mineral (either Hedenbergite or an Amphibole species) as is the case with this stone. The color is very consistent in incandescent light, fluorescent light and sunlight. A really significant stone for any collector. Regardless if you collect gems or minerals, this is an important gem that could be matched with a specimen for a rough and cut set or would be a stunner to add to any gemstone suite. It is INCREDIBLY rare to find a faceted stone with this color and size from any Alpine locality, so do not pass this one up, as the crystals from Huanggang seem to have been mined out, as it's possible we may never see them again. Valued at $6,117.00 retail.
