Item Description

A wonderful example of the famous Rogerley Fluorite specimens. This locality has produced some of the most iconic Fluorites from the English lead mines at Weardale in the modern era of mineral collecting. This piece is an attractive small cabinet display specimen featuring large, sharp, gemmy, interpenetrant twinned crystals (on a cube-diagonal twinning axis) - as often seen from this locality - with rich emerald green color. This penetrating cubic twinned form is what makes these specimens so desirable. The color is rich on this one, showing a deep green hue indoors and it changes into the classic purple shade in sunlight (daylight fluorescence) . The piece also shows the classic bright purple UV fluorescence that is often seen in Rogerley Fluorites. The specimen is not 100% perfect, but it's still a good quality display specimen that looks nice in any kind of lighting. The largest single crystal measures 2.8 cm, though it is not complete, smaller more perfect crystals can be seen surrounding it. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds (#RR0659) who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
