Item Description

With all the colorful secondary lead and copper minerals from various mines in Arizona, I imagine that some people may not realize that there are a handful of places in the state that produce very attractive Fluorite specimens. This piece is from an isolated find in the Santa Teresa Mountains and features a group of gemmy octahedral crystals, free of matrix, showing a lovely mixture of rich purple and light green hues when backlit. There are clearly two generations of deposition here, as the purple crystals are overgrowing a previous generation of green Fluorites, but the effect is striking. The piece is in good condition, as it's largely undamaged, but please note that it is repaired, though quite expertly. I had to look closely to find the repair. The largest individual crystal I could find is about 2.0 cm across. A wonderful oddball locality piece that would certainly make a nice addition to any Arizona suite or a collection of Fluorites.
The piece came to George by way of Malcolm Alter.
Ex George Loud Collection No. 9.2.1 AZ.8; 9967. George (born August 16, 1942) is a well-known mineral collector from Washington, DC and South Carolina respectively, and was a patent lawyer by trade for over 50 years. He assembled one of the great mineral collections in the U.S., comprising worldwide specimens, and in later years he sold the worldwide specimens to focus on minerals of the United States, specifically locality suites with an emphasis on amazing representation of species while still maintaining fine quality. The specimens remarkably range from micros to all the way up to large cabinets in size. We recently acquired most of his impressive 9000+ piece collection, and the VAST majority of these pieces will be offered here in the auctions, as we feel that everyone deserves and equal opportunity at acquiring these important, well-documented and fine quality specimens for their collections.
