Item Description

Striking, sculptural and deceptive large fluorite and quartz combination from this abandoned Soviet-era military-run tungsten-molybdenum deposit. Lustrous fluorite octahedrons, to 2.8 cm, are dramatically, richly and preferentially set among an impressive, 3-dimensional cluster of translucent milky quartz crystals, to 6.3 cm, with interesting stepped-growth prism faces. DECEPTIVE fluorites, in that they appear dark purple under normal light - BUT when backlit are color-zoned and show pretty sky-blue interiors with dark purple rims. The mine closed in 1996. The interior is pristine and the bit of noted periphery wear has minimal impact to the overal high quality of this piece. Ex Al Kidwell Collection. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist with Carter Oil Company and later Exxon Oil Company in Houston, Texas. The phosphate species Kidwellite was named in his honor in 1974. The piece displays well without aid, as the base has been sawed. A very fine large combination from the locale. Rare old material today!
