Item Description
While Apophyllite is not considered rare from the Deccan Trap, faceted stones are notably hard to find, especially in this size, as the crystals are rarely 100% transparent and thick enough to produce gems like this. A gorgeous "Portuguese Round Brilliant" cut colorless gem makes up half of this attractive rough and cut set. The stone is clearly a custom cut and looks amazing in any light. You have to remember that because Apophyllite has perfect cleavage one direction, it makes cutting gems very difficult, as any amount of pressure in the wrong direction will cause the gem to fall apart during the faceting process. The fact that the stone is over 8 carats is truly impressive.. The specimen hosts some really attractive, colorless, sharp, very lustrous crystals - the largest of which is doubly-terminated - and makes for a great match for the stone. I realize that Indian Apophyllites are common on the market, but faceted stones are NOT common, so it makes rough and cut sets very difficult to assemble. Valued $1,500.
