Fluorapophyllite-(K) coating Amethyst (rare association) (ex Brian Kosnar Collection)

Item Description

The Fengjiashan Mine (Daye Mine) was producing these specimens bank in the late 1990s, about the same time as the killer Inesite and Hubeite specimens started coming out. This piece is from the collection of Brian Kosnar who purchased it from the Rocksmiths in 1999. It features sharp, tabular chalky white crystals of Fluorapophyllite-(K) which are coating most sides of a single prism of medium purple color Amethyst. There is actually a smaller secondary Amethyst crystal at the base of the specimen for nice touch. If you look underneath, you'll see the bottom is not broken, but rather has a thin coating of tiny Fluorapophyllite-(K) crystals, and this piece is nearly a complete "floater", but there is only a small point of contact / attachment on the base. It's important to note that while neither Fluorapophyllite-(K) nor Amethyst are rare in the mineral world, the combination of the two on the same specimen is quite difficult to find outside of the Fengjiashan Mine. A fine quality example of these now seldom-seen specimens.
