Item Description

This extinct open-pit Cu-Mo mine, operated between 1955-2002, is best known for excellent apophyllite specimens. This large, rich, showy and typical specimen features distinctive pretty satin lustre, glassy translucent beveled tetragonal crystals, to 1.4 cm, with gray centers outlined by white. Interestingly, the mounded mass of apophyllite crystals grew on an intergrown cluster of glassy, translucent, gray calcite rhombs, adding character. Ex Kay Robertson # 5463 and acquired from the Shale's in the late 1960s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). A classic and choice large example of the species and locale.
