Item Description

The iron mine at Cerro de Mercado is well known for its spectacular yellow-green Fluorapatites. This specimen displays a highly desirable aesthetic of a sharp single 4.2 cm Fluorapatite crystal framed against a small amount of contrasting matrix. The well formed and terminated hexagonal crystal is complete. It is characterized by a translucent gemmy quality, vitreous luster, and that electric yellow-green color. The matrix is a combination of Quartz, Hyalite Opal, Hematite and much smaller damaged Fluorapatite crystals. The main crystal is damage free with a contacted base at the attachment point. The piece has a nice fluorescent response especially with the standout bright green color from the Hyalite Opal.
