Item Description
Apatite (fluorapatite to be proper about the current naming conventions) from Pakistan is well known, as is spessartine garnet in large crystals. However, in combination, this is almost unheard of - and this is not merely a combo but an actual intergrowth of the two species! I have seen small specimens of 1-3 cm, with apatite and spessartine garnet intergrown, before. But I had never seen a monster like this, except for this single specimen in the Meieran collection specializing in the gem pegmatite minerals of Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has been at it for 40 years specifically, and took particular pride in assembling large suites of combinations of species. These are both aesthetic and educational! In this case, we cannot imagine how a 5 cm apatite formed as if conjoined and dancing with a 5 cm garnet crystal; and both of them are sharp and without deformations. They intergrew, without disrupting each other's growth and symmetry in other words. That is just bizarre to think about! It is complete all around. This specimen comes with Gene's custom lucite base, noting location. He had valued it at $7500-plus.
